You have tried everything. Newspaper, coffee filters, newspaper again, a squeegee that looked good at the hardware store. You still get streaks. Here is the thing about window cleaning streaking – it is not about the cloth or the solution. It is about technique. And the technique is simpler than you think.
Why Windows Streak
Most people clean windows and the second the sun hits the glass, they see exactly where they cleaned. The streak is not leftover dirt – it is residue. Specifically, it is either too much liquid, the wrong solution, or cleaning in the wrong direction while the solution is still wet. Fix those three things and you will never streak a window again.
The Solution That Works for Streak-Free Window Cleaning
Professional window cleaners use one simple mixture: a small amount of dish soap – the kind you use to hand-wash dishes – in a window washing bucket mixed with clean water. That is it. Not vinegar (it leaves mineral deposits as it dries), not glass cleaner with ammonia (it leaves residue on the edges), not a mixture you bought at the auto parts store. Dish soap and water.
Why dish soap? It cuts the oil and grease that accumulate on glass – from cooking, from fingerprints, from traffic – without leaving a film. A single drop in a spray bottle of water is enough. Less is more here.
The Window Cleaning Technique That Prevents Streaking
Spray or use a professional applicator (mop as some lovingly call it) to apply the solution directly onto the glass – do not spray a cloth and wipe. Apply directly to the glass. Then take a squeegee – a proper one, with a rubber blade – and pull it across the glass in a single smooth motion. Top to bottom. Overlap each stroke slightly so you are not leaving gaps. The solution and the dirt come off in one pass.
What About the Second Story Windows?
If you are cleaning upper-floor windows from the ground with an extension pole, the same principles apply but the logistics change. You need a water-fed pole system – deionized water that leaves no mineral residue as it dries. This is what professionals use for upper-story windows. Without a water-fed pole, you are just moving the dirt around on the second floor. A garden hose with a window cleaning attachment is better than nothing, but it will not give you the streak-free result you are looking for.
For a Conway or Central Arkansas home with multiple stories, this is where hiring a professional makes more sense than struggling with a ladder and a spray bottle. The equipment – a proper water-fed pole system – costs $300-500 to buy and requires some practice to use well. A professional window cleaner brings all of it and finishes a two-story home in under an hour.
The Streak-Free Window Cleaning Checklist
- Use dish soap and clean water – just a dollop in a bucket or spray bottle
- Spray the glass, do not wet a cloth
- Squeegee top to bottom in overlapping strokes
- Do not wipe a large margin of the edge, go finger width, after squeegeeing
- Work fast enough that the solution does not dry before you finish the pane
- For upper floors, professionals use a water-fed pole – never a garden hose
Follow that checklist and your windows will be streak-free. It is not complicated – but it is very specific.
